Smooth Transitions

Posted on Updated on

Life seems to be shifting so rapidly now. So many of my patients are presenting with complaints of stress, insomnia, anxiety, depression and fatigue related to major life transitions. Divorce and other significant relationships ending, deaths of friends and family members, loss of jobs and homes, accidents…especially motor vehicle. It’s as is life is pulling the rug out from under us.

Even happy changes like new relationships, weddings and childbirth can bring a sense of unease as you attempt to balance all you’ve been with what you’re becoming.

During times of transitions, life can seem daunting. Your head is in the clouds wondering where you’re going or your feet are stuck in the mud of self doubt.

I always counsel my patients that everything is a blessing, often in disguise as a lesson. The secret to thriving during change is to open to receive the gift of each and every encounter.

Here’s how to stay grounded in gratitude during life’s transitions: Read the rest of this entry »

How Stress Makes You Gain Weight

Stress—a fact of modern day living, and the cause of so many diseases. Stress has been linked to heart disease, cancer, allergies, autoimmune disease, thyroid dysfunction, mood disorders and obesity.

While stress affects many parts of the body, the adrenals are responsible for creating the stress response.

What are the Adrenals?

The adrenals are small glands that lie on top (ad) of the kidneys (renals). These amazing glands have multiple functions. While the adrenals are endocrine glands producing hormones in response to pituitary stimulus that control carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, the adrenals also respond to neurological stimuli to initiate the fight or flight response, as well as electrolytes circulating in the blood to control blood pressure, and produce cytokines that influence immune function.

That’s a lot of responsibility for one pair of glands. Read the rest of this entry »

Working with the Mind-Body Connection

Posted on Updated on

We have heard much of the Mind-Body connection. How thought creates reality. I believe the connection is deeper. That the body is the perfect vehicle for the soul in this earthly dimension. It is through the dense, sensual physical body that the soul learns profound lessons and experiences precious gifts.

Within the temple of the body exists all the knowledge needed for the soul to complete its journey here on earth. The vital information lies deep within each cell, in the genetic blueprint—the DNA. Encoded for optimal existence, our DNA resonates with the earth, with the plants and the animals. And our DNA resonates with others through the experience of Emotion. Emotion is the path to the soul, the body is the garden in which the path takes form. Read the rest of this entry »

Tips to Live Longer

I recently got tagged on Facebook after one of my friends read an article called Secrets From The Island Where People Forget To Die.

My friend said, “Thought of you, Deborah, when I read this article. Sounds like your words of wisdom.”

Well, the island is Ikaria in the north Aegean Sea. The people there live well into their eight, ninth, and tenth decades. Yes, it is common to see one hundred year old Greeks in the market, gardening, enjoying life. In fact, heart disease, cancer, diabetes are rarely heard of on this island. So how is it that these people rarely suffer from the same illnesses that shorten the lives of the rest of us.

In her her new cookbook Ikaria: Lessons on Food, Life, and Longevity from the Greek Island Where People Forget to Die, Diane Kochilas sums up as six things which I totally agree with. Read the rest of this entry »

How to Transform Yourself

Posted on Updated on

It’s been a time of turmoil. A rollercoaster of events creating great change. Some desired. Some unexpected, but needed. Some dreaded, but well, here it is. The whole world is transforming. People around the world are asking for change, gathering, protesting, demonstrating. The time is ripe for transformation. Why?

Because we cannot evolve without change. We have been like caterpillars consuming everything in our need to grow. And then it seems everything stood still…there was little growth…as if we were in a cocoon of our own making…some have called it a recession and financially perhaps it is, but I call it a transformation. For under the stillness, great change is occurring. The caterpillar is transforming into a butterfly. Soon the first of the butterflies will emerge. Read the rest of this entry »

Healing Transformations

Posted on Updated on

2017 started off with a bang. So much change in so short a time. When change happens this quickly it can cause physical symptoms.

You might notice changes in sleep patterns. You may experience anxiety or depression, foggy thinking, low energy. You may experience the stress of some crazy events in the world.

What was once true seems to shifting. Everything changes. Are you ready for a big transformation?

In 1997 I decided to leave conventional medicine and go out on my own to start my own integrative health care practice. It’s been a journey and now I have come full circle. Ironic, since I named my practice—Full Circle Family Health. I wanted to get back to the root of health care, to be able to practice the art of healing, to use my scientific training to become a medical detective, to uncover the root of dis-ease, to find alternative therapies when allopathic medicine could not heal or was not the patient’s choice. And I did. I created a holistic health care practice that focused on individualized therapy for each patient by merging the science of medicine with the art of healing. Read the rest of this entry »

Help! I’m losing my hair!

Posted on Updated on

Sally came to me complaining of hair loss. She had tried everything – every hair growth product on the market, every prescription for hair loss treatment, every supplement to help grow hair. At 38, she only had half her hair left.

Sally had been losing hair for the past ten years. I asked her what happened ten years ago. She described a major life change which included a career shift while involved in an abusive relationship. She also described a very stressful childhood.  Poor lifestyle choices during the formative years of her adolescence led to malnutrition, toxicity, and living in a constant state of fear.
