Hormonally Challenged

Evolving Humans

Posted on Updated on

From Living Fast and Dying Young, to Living Slow and Dying Old

Will our grandchildren be an entirely different type of human being? Evolutionary anthropologist Cadell Last has a theory that humans are undergoing an evolutionary transition that is being driven by our culture. Rather than biological evolution that caused physical changes in our evolving species over millions of years, Last believes that cultural evolution is changing the human species in a matter of decades.

What we focus our attention on, what we do changes our DNA. We are becoming a new type of human being. Cadell Last explains that, “Humans are naturally interested in music, movies, mathematics, and science and all of these things. So we’re just entering a world where we can own our own cultural reproduction, and we can engage in this for an entire lifetime.” Read the rest of this entry »

How Stress Makes You Gain Weight

Stress—a fact of modern day living, and the cause of so many diseases. Stress has been linked to heart disease, cancer, allergies, autoimmune disease, thyroid dysfunction, mood disorders and obesity.

While stress affects many parts of the body, the adrenals are responsible for creating the stress response.

What are the Adrenals?

The adrenals are small glands that lie on top (ad) of the kidneys (renals). These amazing glands have multiple functions. While the adrenals are endocrine glands producing hormones in response to pituitary stimulus that control carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, the adrenals also respond to neurological stimuli to initiate the fight or flight response, as well as electrolytes circulating in the blood to control blood pressure, and produce cytokines that influence immune function.

That’s a lot of responsibility for one pair of glands. Read the rest of this entry »

Working with the Mind-Body Connection

Posted on Updated on

We have heard much of the Mind-Body connection. How thought creates reality. I believe the connection is deeper. That the body is the perfect vehicle for the soul in this earthly dimension. It is through the dense, sensual physical body that the soul learns profound lessons and experiences precious gifts.

Within the temple of the body exists all the knowledge needed for the soul to complete its journey here on earth. The vital information lies deep within each cell, in the genetic blueprint—the DNA. Encoded for optimal existence, our DNA resonates with the earth, with the plants and the animals. And our DNA resonates with others through the experience of Emotion. Emotion is the path to the soul, the body is the garden in which the path takes form. Read the rest of this entry »

Amino Acids to Balance the Brain

Posted on Updated on

Can you balance your brain with nutrition? Well, science says yes. Our brains need specific nutrients for proper functioning. And malfunctioning brains need more.

At the center of the brain lies the maestro—the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus orchestrates the symphony of hormones produced by the neuro-immune-endocrine system. These “hormones” control all of your body’s functioning—digestion, detoxification, growth, repair, sleep, sex drive, reproduction, stress response, metabolism, body composition, immunity, healing, cognition, learning and memory.

The hypothalamus also controls the amino acids that the rest of the brain uses to function. And most people do not get the proper nutrition to supply the brain with what it needs for optimal function. That’s one of the reasons antidepressants, anti-anxiety and memory enhancing drugs are so commonly prescribed today. Read the rest of this entry »

The Male Brain and Hormones

Is Male Behavior affected by Hormones?

Of course! Any woman knows that. Men are as affected by their hormones as we women are affected by ours. Yet it takes a study from Cambridge University to prove to the world of powerful men that indeed, their behavior is affected by hormones.

What’s most interesting is that this recent study looked at not male athletic or sexual performance, but how testosterone levels affect financial decisions.

In today’s world where the alpha male is not judged as much by his brawn but by his brains (or at least his ability to make money), these findings are quite significant. The study found that the higher the morning levels of testosterone were, the more money made that day. Read the rest of this entry »

Many depressed, anxious, learning disabled and stressed patients are best served by healing their hypothalamus.

How Hormones Control Everything

Posted on Updated on

In this introduction to the power of hormones, we first learn how east meets west in Deborah’s DMAR pyramid of health. But then we see how powerful hormones are, you just need to understand where they fit in.

The Nuero-immune-endocrine system, mentioned at the top of the pyramid, describes your full set of hormones – all controlled by the hypothalamus! But what is it?

It’s a long word so let’s break it down. The nuero part has to do with your brain. (IE the stuff Nueroscience explores) There are lots of hormones that influence your brain, and even how you think! Are you hungry? Maybe your leptin is at play.

The immune system we are all too familiar with, but did you know part of its system involves hormones? The adrenal glands have their say, which is why you often get sick when you’re stressed!

And last but certainly not least is the endocrine system itself. The word might not be as familiar as the first two, but the endocrine system produces all the famous hormones, like the ones related to sex steroids, mood, metabolism, and sleep. If you’ve heard of melatonin you have heard of one of the products of the endocrine system.

If you have already watched the video it’s worth another glance to understand how huge our hormones are.

We have so many different kinds of hormones at work, dancing with your DNA for your health!

How Hormones Affect Your Digestion and Detoxification

You are what you eat…literally.

You know that protein builds muscle and that carbohydrates are energy foods, but did you know that every chemical you make, every hormone, every neurotransmitter, every cytokine, all come from nutrients derived from the food you eat?

If your diet does not provide all the nutrients necessary to run your system, then something has to go…Usually those parts of your body that are not crucial for life–your skin, your hair, your nails. Your internal health is directly related to your external appearance. Read the rest of this entry »
