Helping the Elderly (and us Caretakers) Sleep

Posted on Updated on

As our population lives longer than ever before, many of us are becoming caretakers for our elderly.

As the brain ages, sleep lightens. When enough sleep is missed, the brain can become over stimulated. Then it becomes even more difficult to get needed rest.

In desperation, most of us tend to reach for either pharmaceutical drugs or natural remedies to help us sleep.

Some elderly people get overstimulated by that which should calm them down. It can be the first dose or an over accumulation of medications or supplements that they haven’t completely metabolized. Read the rest of this entry »

Amino Acids to Balance the Brain

Posted on Updated on

Can you balance your brain with nutrition? Well, science says yes. Our brains need specific nutrients for proper functioning. And malfunctioning brains need more.

At the center of the brain lies the maestro—the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus orchestrates the symphony of hormones produced by the neuro-immune-endocrine system. These “hormones” control all of your body’s functioning—digestion, detoxification, growth, repair, sleep, sex drive, reproduction, stress response, metabolism, body composition, immunity, healing, cognition, learning and memory.

The hypothalamus also controls the amino acids that the rest of the brain uses to function. And most people do not get the proper nutrition to supply the brain with what it needs for optimal function. That’s one of the reasons antidepressants, anti-anxiety and memory enhancing drugs are so commonly prescribed today. Read the rest of this entry »

How Hormones Control Everything

Posted on Updated on

In this introduction to the power of hormones, we first learn how east meets west in Deborah’s DMAR pyramid of health. But then we see how powerful hormones are, you just need to understand where they fit in.

The Nuero-immune-endocrine system, mentioned at the top of the pyramid, describes your full set of hormones – all controlled by the hypothalamus! But what is it?

It’s a long word so let’s break it down. The nuero part has to do with your brain. (IE the stuff Nueroscience explores) There are lots of hormones that influence your brain, and even how you think! Are you hungry? Maybe your leptin is at play.

The immune system we are all too familiar with, but did you know part of its system involves hormones? The adrenal glands have their say, which is why you often get sick when you’re stressed!

And last but certainly not least is the endocrine system itself. The word might not be as familiar as the first two, but the endocrine system produces all the famous hormones, like the ones related to sex steroids, mood, metabolism, and sleep. If you’ve heard of melatonin you have heard of one of the products of the endocrine system.

If you have already watched the video it’s worth another glance to understand how huge our hormones are.

We have so many different kinds of hormones at work, dancing with your DNA for your health!

How Hormones Affect Your Brain

Excerpt from The Survival Guide for the Hormonally Challenged Woman

Just hang out with a woman about a couple of days before her menses and witness the power of hormones. As her sex steroids plummet so does her demeanor. Not all women suffer from PMS but most will admit to feeling different, less tolerant, more emotional than the rest of the month.

Not just female hormones, but male hormones affect the brain. Believe me, I see many middle aged men prescribed antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs when in fact their moods are related to declining testosterone. Both the male and female brain is affected by hormones. Read the rest of this entry »

When Your Gut Makes You Anxious

Posted on Updated on

Remember, your gut is your second brain. And it influences the brain in your head.

Mitch came to me with severe anxiety. He had been suffering from panic attacks, insomnia and generalized anxiety for months. His doctors had given him anti-anxiety meds but he wanted off. He wanted his life back.

As a professional artist, Mitch found the treatment to be nearly as debilitating as the panic attacks. Like the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, Mitch felt like his brain wasn’t working. The drugs blocked his creative abilities so much so that he couldn’t work, he couldn’t support himself, and that made him more depressed, more anxious. Read the rest of this entry »

Best Diet/Lifestyle for Healthy Hormones

Posted on Updated on

Ever wonder what lifestyle promotes the healthiest hormones? Well, this woman did, and here’s my answer:

Q: I have been taking Genesis Gold and Sacred Seven for a little over two months now, and I am amazed at the changes I have been experiencing. I sleep better, have more energy during the day, my mood has become more positive, my hair and skin are soft and radiant, and my libido has been improved. I am hopeful that my hormone levels will improve, I will be able to lose weight, and my fertility will increase. Just have to give it more time.*

I am not only writing to tell you thanks for the wonderful products, but to ask a question, too. I am wondering if you could give me a few pointers on a healthy diet/lifestyle? There are so many fad diets out there, and each claim to be the best. Some claim carbs are good, some claim carbs are bad. Same goes with fat. I know that it isn’t always black and white like that, some carbs/fats are better than others. But all the information I see and hear contradicts each other. I really want to lose weight and keep my heart healthy, but my medical issues make it very challenging. I am hoping that now that I take your wonderful supplements I may have some success. I would very much appreciate your input on what your idea of a healthy diet is. Thank you so much.
